LUBBOCK, Texas – Former Texas Tech right-handed pitcher Nathan Karns made his Major League Baseball debut in a start for the Washington Nationals on Tuesday evening against the Baltimore Orioles during the Nationals' 9-3 win over the Orioles at Nationals Park.

Karns, 25, became the 24th Red Raider to make his MLB Debut while going 4.1 innings with three strikeouts while allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and two home runs allowed. Karns left the game in the fifth inning with one out with the Nationals leading 7-3 after throwing 85 pitches (50 strikes).

Karns is the 15th Texas Tech pitcher to make his MLB debut and is the sixth Red Raider to make a debut in a starting role. The last four years the Red Raiders have had five former pitchers make their MLB debuts (Dustin Richardson, Josh Tomlin, Zach Stewart, A.J. Ramos, Nathan Karns).

In addition, Karns is the first Red Raider to make his MLB debut as a starter and lead his team to a win since Josh Tomlin pitched seven innings during his Indians debut in 2010 in a 4-1 victory over the Yankees in Cleveland.

Karns becomes the second Red Raider from the 2009 MLB Draft class to make his big-league debut following right-handed pitcher A.J. Ramos who was called up and made his debut for the Miami Marlins last September. Karns was a 12th round draft pick by the Nationals and Ramos was a 22nd round pick by the Marlins.

Karns pitched two seasons at Tech (2008-2009) while ranking among team leaders both seasons in innings pitched and strikeouts. During his Tech career he won eight games with 104.1 innings pitched with 105 strikeouts in 25 starts.

Karns entered the season ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the Nationals organization after being named the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2012 following a standout season that included an 11-4 record and 2.17 ERA in 24 outings (18 starts) with 116.0 innings pitched, 148 strikeouts and 47 walks allowed. His ERA and strikeout totals led all Washington minor league pitchers.
