Twin Cities share healthy city honors

Posted: Updated:

The Twin Cities are the fittest in the country, according to the American Fitness Index.

The American College of Sports Medicine created the rankings of the top 50 metropolitan areas in the U.S. by studying their environmental and physical health. They took into account how many parks, walking trails and recreational facilities were available in each city, as well as resident's smoking status, obesity levels and chronic health problems.

Washington D.C. came in second place, and Oklahoma City came in last.

Experts say cities can improve their fitness ranking by implementing smoking bans in all public areas, building more parks and requiring physical education through high school.
