Starving NM herd to be sold to Texas buyer

Posted: Updated:

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An eastern New Mexico rancher has been allowed to sell his herd of emaciated cattle to a Texas buyer after a state agency seized livestock from his drought-stricken ranch.

A Tucumcari district attorney told the Albuquerque Journal (http://bit.ly/13oAnZU) Thursday that a judge agreed to allow Double V Ranch owner Richard Evans to sell the herd to a buyer in Pampa, Texas.

New Mexico Livestock Board officials served a search warrant at the ranch near Fort Sumner earlier this month and found at least 25 dead animals.

Evans was charged with cruelty to animals.

Tenth Judicial District Attorney Tim Rose said the size of the herd at the Double V Ranch may be as large as 1,700 head.

A number listed for Double V Ranch was a fax number.
