Friday, Lubbock citizens celebrated "World No Tobacco Day" in Mose Hood Park at 24th and Avenue Q.
The World Health Organization has designated the 31st as a day to reflect on the effects of tobacco use.
Participants are also asked to abstain from tobacco products for 24 hours.
Communities all over the world made the pledge along with citizens in Lubbock.
The Lubbock event was organized by Manage Care Center.
The local group released 1,200 red balloons into the air to represent the daily number of lives lost in the U.S. due to tobacco use.
