LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A local church teamed up with the South Plains Food Bank on Wednesday evening to bag up more than 50,000 pounds of donated potatoes.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints donated the potatoes as part of their "Summer Of Sharing" event.

David Weaver is CEO of the South Plains Food Bank.

He says the donation will feed around 10,000 families in Lubbock and the surrounding counties.

"Potatoes are one of those staples that we love to get. Our clients love it. Everybody can utilize potatoes in some form or fashion. This is fresh produce, so it's really going to be a treat for our clients," Weaver said.

Weaver says the organization is very grateful to the church for such a hefty donation.

With the help of the local community, the South Plains Food Bank says it is able to serve around 84,000 people every year.
