Power is now available for all customers in the LP&L service territory. LP&L crews have been working rotating sixteen hour shifts in the field, night and day, starting Wednesday night. These crews, along with dispatch and LP&L staff, worked without interruption through the weekend in order to close out all reported outages.
The storm, which carried with it winds well over 80 miles per hour, caused severe damage to infrastructure throughout the entire service territory which led to over 19,000 reported outages at its peak. By early Thursday morning, the LP&L electric system was fully up and running and all major lines had been re-energized. Crews then began the longer task of repairing all remaining individual outages.
As of Saturday, at 11:30 am CST, the live electric outage map located on the LP&L website showed 895 outages. LP&L set a goal of 90% restoration of reported outages by midnight Saturday. That goal was exceeded with 98% of reported outages restored at approximately 10:30pm last night. Work continued over the night and through Sunday in order to meet the stated goal of having power available to all customers by Sunday evening. That goal was met at 7:42pm Sunday night.
The damage to the LP&L system caused by Wednesday night's storm has been estimated to be the largest since the tornado of 1970. Hardest hit areas, which included the region surrounding Clovis Highway required substantial construction over an extended period of time. The additional contract crews from Dixie Electric and Bird Electric brought in to work starting Saturday morning helped the LP&L crews tackle these larger construction projects in the hardest hit areas.
This has been a trying time for everyone involved in the aftermath of this storm but no one has been tested more than those customers who remained without power for an extended period of time. Their patience and understanding throughout this process has been greatly appreciated. LP&L crews, many of whom were also without power in their homes, worked continuously from start to finish to make this as quick a restoration as possible.
