Certain fireworks banned for July 4th

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Lubbock County Commissioners are banning certain fireworks during this year's Fourth of July celebrations, and could enact a ban on all fireworks if the drought index continues to climb.

In a meeting Monday, they decided to put a ban on rockets with sticks and missiles with fins.

Despite the recent rainfall, commissioners say the weather is still too dry, and the drought index is too high.

County Commissioner Mark Heinrich says if the index continues to climb, they could enact a ban on all fireworks by June 21.

"We continue to monitor the situation as far as the drought conditions, as we move forward to see if anything else needs to be done between now and July 4th, on a daily basis, " Heinrich said.

Commercial fireworks stands throughout Lubbock County are scheduled to open on June 23.
