Scientists can identify Melanoma by odor

Posted: Updated:

Scientists have found an innovative new way to find the deadliest type of skin cancer.

Researchers from the Monell Chemical Senses Center analyzed airborne molecules in the odors that come from human skin cells, and it turns out that they determined there is a unique chemical signature for melanoma.

As a result, researchers say they can tell the difference between normal skin cells and melanoma cells just by the odor they release.

This finding could someday lead to a non-invasive way to find that skin cancer.
