Researchers have discovered an interesting way to protect against high blood pressure…volunteer work.
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University studied more than 1,000 people over age 51. Those who reported having served at least 200 hours of volunteer work in recent years were 40% less likely to develop hypertension over the next four years.
200 hours would be about 4 hours a week for a year.
Experts think the social connections made through volunteer work may be the key to reducing stress and lowering blood pressure.
