Saving lives with boating safety instruction

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

If you're planning to hit the waves this summer, boating safety classes are easy on the pocketbook, and can potentially save lives.

In addition to a life jacket, education is key when it comes to remaining safe on the water.

The Coast Guard reports that there were 43 reported fatalities and 255 injuries in the U.S. in 2011.

In 78 percent of all U.S. boating deaths that year, the operator had no boating instruction.

Texas saw 6.4 deaths for every 100,000 registered boaters, up from 4.7 in 2010.

Coast Guard data says that puts Texas in third place behind Florida and California in percentage of the nation's boating fatalities.

Classes will be offered at Possum Kingdom Lake, Lake Grandbury and Lake Limestone.
