Destiny Dawn Barnes

Destiny Dawn Barnes was born on September 6, 1994 in Brownfield, Texas to Lola and Donald Barnes. She has one brother, Derrick Shawn Barnes, born on June 9, 1984. He graduated Seagraves in 2002. Destiny has attended Seagraves ISD almost all 15 years of her life except 6th grade when she attended Denver City for half a semester and Dexter, Missouri school for the other semester. "I'm glad I came back…even though I missed attending Seagraves Middle School for one year, I get to graduate from my hometown school and I couldn't ask for a better school to graduate from!" Destiny will be graduating Valedictorian of the 2013 class with a GPA of 93.8. She will also be graduating with Honors and a Recommended Diploma. "Ever since freshman year when the counselor told me I was 1st in my class, my goal was then set to graduate Valedictorian of my class and I accomplished it!" said Barnes. Barnes could be found throughout the day with a book in her hand and in the library. "The library has practically been my home the past four years during school. I love reading and writing, and the library is just one of the places I went to focus and get school work done. I'm truly going to miss it!" Destiny participated in cross country and basketball her sophomore year, but she knew that her strengths weren't in sports but in academics. "I'm considered a nerd and a geek, but I had to be called something because I'm not the athletic type," said Barnes. Destiny participated in National Honor Society, Future Teachers of America, and Student Council. In U.I.L, she participated in News, Feature, and Ready Writing. Destiny also has written articles for the Talon. "Participating in writing events in school has definitely encouraged me to pursue a career in the writing field. Writing has always been a passion of mine, and I know that's what I want to do for the rest of my life." At the awards banquet, Destiny was awarded the Valedictorian Scholarship and the Joe Raymond Bandy Memorial Scholarship for $500. Destiny will be attending West Texas A&M University in the fall to minor in Creative Writing and major in English and then pursue a Counseling Major for Substance Abuse, Marriage & Family Counseling and etc. Destiny wants to eventually write short stories, an autobiography, biographies, and children's stories. Destiny said graduating is bittersweet. "About 14 years of attending Seagraves School and it's finally over. It's a bittersweet feeling, and I can't believe it's finally came to an end. I would like to thank Seagraves ISD and all the teachers who have spent the same amount of time as us students, teaching us the things we need to know, not only for college, but for life! I know that each and every one of my fellow classmates will go on to accomplish and achieve great things in life. I encourage everyone to press on after stepping off the stage! Accomplish everything you want to accomplish and have no doubts in your dreams, life or yourself! Congratulations to the class of 2013, you may think this is the end but it's only a chapter that's ending and your story just beginning!" "I'd also like to thank my mom. She has been the best mother a daughter could have. Thank you for putting me through school, staying by my side, and encouraging me to do my best and accomplish my goals throughout school and for helping me all those nights study when I had a test the next day! You're the greatest!"
