Lubbock County reminds residents of burn rules

Posted: Updated:

From Lubbock County Office of Emergency Management:

 Lubbock County Commissioners Court, Lubbock County Sheriff's Office and the Lubbock County Office of Emergency Management would like to remind Lubbock County Citizens of the rules governing outdoor burning in Texas.

People in Lubbock County are responsible for obeying all applicable laws and restrictions relating to outdoor burning within the county. This includes all Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regulations and all Municipal burn bans and firework bans. In addition, anyone who causes or is responsible for a fire which gets out of control and causes damage, injury, or death could face civil and criminal liability.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality burn rules can be found at: http://www.tceq.texas.gov/publications/rg/rg-049.html

Lubbock County residents are advised to use common sense and to take necessary precautions when burning any material outdoors in order to ensure the safety of people and property in the community. Residents are advised to:

  • Be aware of wind and weather conditions, e.g. Red Flag Warnings;
  • Have a fire extinguisher or water source immediately available;
  • Have immediate access to a phone to call for help if necessary;
  • Notify the sheriff's office and local fire department of any controlled burns;
  • Attend fires at all time with a spotter; and
  • Extinguish fires before dark.

In addition, Lubbock County residents are permitted to buy and use most kinds of fireworks this 4th of July fireworks season, although fireworks described as "skyrockets with sticks" and "missiles with fins" are still prohibited from sale or use.
