Treating dangerous diarrhea with fecal transplants

Posted: Updated:

This story comes from the Mayo clinic, where a gastroenterologist is making headlines.

He's opening up a clinic to treat a common infection that causes dangerous Feca in patients. In order to fight this infection, called clostridium difficile or cdiff for short, he is concentrating on a new treatment called a fecal transplant.

The idea is to help patients restore a healthy intestinal tract by placing a healthy donor stool into the patient's colon.

It's hard to treat cdiff with antibiotics, because the antibiotics also attack the healthy bacteria in our gut. But, a stool transplant replaces the healthy bacteria we need.

The Mayo clinic says this procedure has proven to be quick and inexpensive with a 90% success rate.
