Dawgs' D using low expectations as motivation

ATHENS, GA (WALB) -

A college football program's success is defined by it's ability to continuously reload.

Georgia's success will be defined in 2013 by the Dawgs' ability to reload defensively.

Only four starters return to a unit that is one year removed from being as star-studded as any in the country.

Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree, John Jenkins, and Shawn Williams will all suit up for NFL teams this fall- leaving behind a potentially talented, but inexperienced unit in Athens.

That's why many have low expectations for the defense, but head coach Mark Richt says that's just adding extra motivation.

"Everybody's kind of expecting some kind of let down in talent and in play, but these guys may see it differently," Richt says. "Hopefully, they want to make sure they're not the weak link, and that they can rise to the occasion. But it's going to take a lot of youth to come through for us."

One Dawg that will be back is cornerback Damian Swann, who sees the low expectations being put on his teammates as a slight to be answered.

"We do take it as a challenge. I think we can be as solid as Georgia has ever been on defense," Swann says. "With the recruiting that we've done, and with the guys that we have, I think we've got as many bodies as we can have on defense."
