16-year-old Mariah Leon became the first Golden Gloves National Champion from Lubbock since Orlin Norris in 1986. She defeated five former champions on her way to the title.
We asked Leon how it felt to win.
"It's the greatest feeling ever," she said. "I won this title, wow! Not a lot of girls can say that they have accomplished something this big."
Leon trains under Coach Edward Hernandez of the Lubbock Warriors Boxing Club. The Lubbock Warriors have a rich history of boxing tradition, tallying 164 state champions and 14 national champions including a team title in 2005. The club has had at least one individual state champion each of the past 44 years.
Coach Hernandez said, "We've just been fortunate enough that we do hold the record nationally for the most champions produced out of any one single club in the United States."
Leon says her goal has always been to box in the Olympics, and with this victory Leon's name is placed in consideration to represent the U.S. in international boxing.
