LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Family and friends have set up a benefit fund and arranged the funeral for a man who died protecting a friend.

Police say 36-year-old Timothy Lamont James was fatally shot in an apartment while trying to stop a woman's boyfriend from assaulting her last Wednesday.

According to the arrest warrant, 31-year-old Misti Lynn Wilcox and a woman identified as Michelle were at an apartment in the Mission Apartment complex with James, who was asleep in another room.

Police say Michelle began arguing on the phone with her boyfriend, 36-year-old Ebedmelech Lemuel Henry.

A few minutes later, they say Henry and another person came to the door. Michelle let them in and instantly Henry began assaulting Michelle.

Police say James woke up and tried to stop the attack when Henry began to hit James.

Wilcox said she and Michelle ran into the kitchen when they heard three gunshots come from the bedroom.

Henry and the unidentified person ran out of the complex and fled in a white Cadillac.

Police responded to the scene and found James had been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

Police were able to locate Henry later Wednesday afternoon near 77th and Frankford.

He is in custody and charged with murder. Police say they have still not located the second person who was with Henry.

If you are interested in making a donation, you may do so at any City Bank location under Timothy Lamont James Memorial Fund.

James' funeral will take place Wednesday, July 31 at 1 p.m. at College Ave. Baptist Church in Levelland.
