Norwich residents clean up after flooding

NORWICH, CT (WFSB) -

In southeastern Connecticut, heavy downpours swallowed up cars and stranded drivers, while turning backyards into rivers Thursday afternoon.

Many residents still haven't been able to dry out.

More rain in the forecast is the last thing residents in Norwich want at this point. Residents there received around 4 inches of rain Thursday afternoon, that's a month's worth of rainfall, in just a few hours.

For hours, a relentless rain swamped Norwich, turning the Rose City into a soggy one.

With the rain falling at an impressive clip, the storm drains couldn't keep up. That started flooding streets and turning roads into rivers, while leaving drivers with no place to go.

"My husband couldn't get out on his side," Eve Huppert said. "It was much deeper, so I was able to get out onto the grass, go in and get some help. The firemen came and helped get my husband out."

She and her husband were visiting from New Jersey, when their car got caught up in mother nature's mess, on a flooded town road.

For a while, the heavy rainfall, and the flooding that followed, forced the closure of exit 82 off Interstate 395.

Instead of mounting and balancing, the crew at Norwich Tire spent the day flipping, dumping and drying out.

 All of the tires were filled with water, and everything inside the building was filled with mud.

"It's a mess," employee Jerry Chmielecki said.

It wasn't any easier on homeowners, who were left to deal with flooded basements and yards, overtaken by the rising waters.

"The water kept coming in," homeowner Evan Schaad said. "We got our pumps going, and it got deep."

He said he had three sump pumps inside his basement on Shoales Avenue.

"I left the sump pump going all night, and in the morning there were a few places that were dry already," he said.

The flooding washed away parts of the foundations for homes on Plain Hill in Norwichtown.

Norwich Public Utilities was forced to cut power to customers in the effected area on Thursday. Power will be shutdown for 26 customers on Friday around 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
