A new definition from the FDA should give patients with celiac disease peace of mind.
Today the FDA redefined what makes a product "gluten free", so, now all those products will meet the same standards to protect the millions with celiac disease who need that "gluten free" meal to stay in good health.
The problem is, "gluten free" has gotten to be such a buzz word as well as big business.
It's estimated 1 in 5 Americans are buying gluten free products, way more than the number of people who are actually allergic to gluten.
TheFDA says consumers need to understand that although it can be essential to some, gluten free often comes with a lot of sugar and fat, which could be a problem for others.
