AU Basketball team gets in second 2-hour practice in the Bahamas

The Auburn basketball team went through a second two hour practice on Monday morning as the team prepares for its first exhibition game on Tuesday night at 9pm ET as part of the Bahamas Basketball Federation Summer of Thunder Basketball Tournament.

The team was given a brief lesson on the FIBA rules is will be playing under this week when it arrived at the gym and then concluded its two hours in the gym with a 5-on-5 scrimmage.

"I thought we knocked the rust off from yesterday," Auburn head coach Tony Barbee said. "The effect of the sun, the beach, the water, the waterslides, the jet skis – it has taken its toll on the guys but I thought the concentration level was better today. We were still a little too sloppy with the ball, we are just getting used to the international rules. I think the guys are thinking about it a little bit, but we are getting closer and we have to be closer tomorrow when we tee it up."

"Practice was better today," senior forward Allen Payne said. "Our execution was better today than it was yesterday. We are still competing, still going hard and I think that will carry over into tomorrow's game."

With practices being held in the mornings, the team is getting time in the afternoon to become closer while exploring the many facets of the Atlantis resort.

"Our bond is growing," Payne said. "We are doing everything together, enjoying each other's time and having a great time down here in the Bahamas."

"Win, lose or draw it doesn't matter," Barbee said. "This trip is about developing that much-needed chemistry. We did that in some of the stuff we did in the 10 days of practice (back in Auburn). We brought in a sports psychologist, who really helped us along those lines. The growth from this trip is going to pay dividends down the line through the real season."

"We are bonding on the court and also off the court," freshman guard Dion Wade said. "The Bahamas is a perfect place to be for that. We are all coming together, becoming brothers. You can just see how what happens on the court is the same thing off the court."

Auburn faces the Real Deal Shockers on Tuesday, will practice again on Wednesday and then close out its foreign tour with an exhibition match against the Bahamas All Stars on Thursday at 7pm, returning to Auburn on Friday evening.

Auburn is one of nine teams that will play in the Bahamas Basketball Federation 2013 Summer of Thunder Basketball Tournament, which runs the entire month of August. Other college teams on the island at the same time as Auburn include Maryland, Manhattan and Hampton.
