Dust from African storms may blow into Lubbock this week

Posted: Updated:

West Texas is no stranger to dusty skies, but could we receive dust from the Sahara?

Strong winds, associated with storm systems over northern Africa have lofted large amounts of dust into the upper levels of the atmosphere. Once at such high levels, the upper air flow pattern has carried a portion of this dust across the Caribbean, into the Gulf of Mexico, and now into Texas.

This dust could easily get as far west as Lubbock. Though, because almost all of the dust is in the upper part of the atmosphere, adverse effects are not expected, but it could enhance our sunsets over the next couple of days!
