Texas Tech Defense ready to state their case

Posted: Updated:

For the fifth straight season, the Red Raider defense is under new leadership, with Matt Wallerstedt leading the charge as Defensive Coordinator.

Wallerstedt has been a DC at Wyoming and North Alabama, and he sees a team that's eager to excel in the system.

"Defensively, it's an emotional game, played by players who should be playing with emotion. You better be aggressive," Wallerstedt told KCBD NewsChannel 11 Sports.

It's been a revolving door with Defensive Coordinators, from Art Kaufman to Chad Glasgow to James Willis to Ruffin McNeill, so what do the players say makes Wallerstedt different?

"The energy!! He's chest bumpin', jumpin' up and down," said Terrance Bullitt. "You would think he's about to go out and play..."

With all the change at the top, Wallerstedt says the Red Raider D is ready to deliver

"Kids know how diverse the package is. There's a lot of tools in our toolbox - a lot of different coverages, a lot of fronts, blitzes - and they're having fun at it."

With a good defense needed to compete in the Big 12, Red Raider Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury is worry-free knowing Matt Wallerstedt is in charge of the defense.

"Matt's a guy we brought in from A&M. Getting to know him and watching him interact with the players, his charisma, his passion for the game really won me over. I knew if I got the chance, that he'd be my guy."

Tech opens the season Aug. 30 at SMU.
