BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

It's a bit of a fresh start for the Jefferson family at LSU. Former Tiger quarterback Jordan Jefferson had his share of big moments at LSU, but his Tiger career ended poorly for several well-documented reasons. However Jordan's younger brother now seems poised to make an immediate impact as a true freshman defensive back.

"It's been beautiful man," says Rickey Jefferson. "I've been looking forward to this transition for a long time in my life. I'm just thankful for God giving me this opportunity. Thanks to coach Miles, for having faith in me to come here."

Jefferson is hardly a scrawny lad needing years of work in the weight room. He's listed at 5'11, 199 pounds on the latest roster, 12 pounds heavier than what's reflected in the LSU media guide. Now it's just a matter of knowing where to go, before laying the lumber.

"I'm moving around pretty fast. I'm starting to pick up the pace of the defense. I've got good mentors around me like Craig (Loston) to help me with that. Every question that I ask. They tell me if I'm coming out of my break wrong, if I have the wrong alignment. Coach (Corey) Raymond also does a great job with that."

Jefferson smiles with confidence when asked if he'll play right away. He seems to have little doubt he will.

"I just know I'm going to work hard enough to do what I have to do."

Lining up at safety in John Chavis' attack certainly brings with it huge responsibilities, especially for a young man who was just playing at Destrehan High School last fall.

"I'm learning all the checks. You have to know everything. You're like the quarterback of the defense. You have to know what everybody is doing on the field."

Jordan Jefferson can still be seen often around the LSU football complex, usually working up a heavy sweat as he fires passes. He has passed on advice to his talented, younger brother, who's entire collegiate career is literally in front of him.

"He tells me to stay humble and listen to everything the coaches tell you," says Rickey. "Never be late to meetings. Always be eager to learn something new. And be willing to make sacrifices for your team."

And like his older brother, Rickey's already got a great rapport with the head man.

"Coach Miles is a cool dude," he smiles. "We have a good relationship."
