I am quick to scrutinize any taxing entity for growing government, especially when the citizens have to foot the bill in higher taxes.
Having said that, I do give credit when I think they are doing it right.
Well so far in budget planning, county commissioners seem to be doing it right.
I am told commissioners plan to lower the tax rate to offset higher than expected revenue. That's right - they are going to lower your taxes.
They are going to use a surplus in sales and property tax revenue to make up the difference. I am also told the only elected official receiving a raise will be the sheriff.
This is a good example of how government should work. Analyze the numbers, take only what you need and give the rest back to the taxpayers.
Unfortunately, it doesn't always happen that way. So this budget season, I think the school district, the city and all other government entities should take a note from their peers at Lubbock County.
