Could grocery stores in Lubbock soon see some competition? Supermarket chain HEB recently purchased land in Southwest Lubbock, but don't get too excited.
KCBD obtained a copy of the deed confirming that HEB did purchase 15 acres from Steller Land Company on Aug. 7th. The land is on the southwest corner of 114th and Quaker, near Vintage Township.
But don't take out your HEB rewards card just yet.
Dya Campos, director of public affairs for HEB tells us the chain has no plans to build a store in Lubbock. Campos confirmed the purchase of the land, but said sales like this are common in the retail industry.
Linda Ferguson is the President and Principle Broker at WestMark Companies. She says sales like this are common in the retail industry.
"It's not unusual at all for companies to look way in advance for plans to actually do something," Ferguson said.
Ferguson tells us companies often buy in areas where growth is expected.
"Lubbock has hit the map and a lot of companies are looking at us as individuals from around the country," Ferguson said.
Ferguson added that companies sometimes purchase land in multiple areas and wait to see where the most growth is before they build.
