Campus cats released from under Drane Hall Friday

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

UPDATE 8-23: Texas Tech maintenance personnel removed the grates and released all the cats that were under Drane Hall on Friday. Texas Tech says these cats were not trapped for removal but were released.

-----

The Humane Society of West Texas is upset with how Texas Tech is handling some unwanted animals.

"Primarily right now we want these traps removed so the cats can be released and fed," said Sean Chilcote.

The university has had a problem with feral cats for over 25 years. During that time, students like Chilcote have maintained the 11 feeding stations around campus and cared for the animals.

"Primarily it's TNR, which is trap neuter vaccinate release and that way we manage the population," Chilcote said.

The system worked well. So well, in fact, that other universities modeled their system after Texas Tech. But after recent complaints, the school wants to relocate the cats and is closing up many of the holes where they used to hide.

"Once they sealed those openings to those buildings the cats were trapped and are still  trapped underneath the buildings so they have no access to food or water," Chilcote said.

Managing Director for the Office of Communications and Marketing Chris Cook says the university has done nothing wrong.

"Our intent is not to harm these animals," he said. "There are individuals that are being notified every step of the way, every time a cat is trapped. We are doing this safely and humanely as possible to trap the cats in a safe manner. We are paying to have them spayed or neutered upon removal and we have no intention to harm the cats," Cook said.
