The best kept secret is apparently out. ESPN.com reported Thursday night that true freshman walk-on Baker Mayfield will be the starting quarterback for the Red Raiders when they open the season 7 p.m. Friday night at SMU.
Mayfield has been splitting reps with another true freshman Davis Webb, but sources tell ESPN.com that Mayfield took most of the snaps this week.
Ironically, a Lake Travis High graduate will start for the Red Raiders. It's just not Michael Brewer, who is out with an injury. Baker Mayfield at Lake Travis threw for 67 touchdowns in his two seasons as a starter in High School.
Kliff Kingsbury didn't rule out playing both freshmen QB on Friday.
