Flora earns career win No. 300 as Texas Tech tops Grand Canyon

OGDEN, Utah – Texas Tech head coach Don Flora picked up career win No. 300 Saturday morning as the Red Raiders continued the Wildcat Invitational with a 3-1 victory (25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20) over Grand Canyon at Swanson Gymnasium.

Breeann David led four Tech (2-1) players in double figures for kills with a career-high 21 followed by Aubree Piper with 14, Mikia Mills with 13, a career high of her own, and Courtney Ensch with 12.

The win improved Flora to 300-95 as a collegiate head coach heading into the weekend's final match later this afternoon against tournament host Weber State.

"It was good to see us find our offensive rhythm and out-dig a really good defensive team," Flora said. "It shows that what we are working on is starting to pay dividends. We hope to see the same type of performance later this afternoon."

The Red Raiders got off to a slow start early in the match, trailing by as many as seven points before Tech closed the opening set on a 10-0 run. It was Tech's longest scoring run so far this season.

Tech kept Grand Canyon (0-2) in the match, though, thanks to 15 service errors that plagued the Red Raiders throughout each set. The Antelopes, meanwhile, totaled just one service error while drilling four aces.

The Red Raiders were highly accurate on the attack, however, with a .322 hitting percentage that was easily their highest of the tournament. Tech had not previously hit over .300 in a match since defeating Montana on Sept. 6 of last year.

All four of Tech's players in double figures for kills hit over .300 for the match, led by Ensch, who in just her third collegiate match, totaled a .526 attacking percentage that was the highest for a Red Raider with at least 10 kills since Lydia McKay recorded the same exact mark on Sept. 14 last year against Houston Baptist.

Tech had not previously had four players in double digits for kills since finishing with five last year against Houston Baptist. Emily Ruetter balanced the offense with 52 assists to go along with 14 digs, marking the sophomore's seventh double-double of her career and first of the season.

Rachel Brummitt led Tech with 15 digs on the back row while Carlie Foust reached double digits for the second-straight match after notching 12 digs off the bench.

Hayleigh Friemoth and Britta Forsythe led Grand Canyon with 11 kills each while Kaitlynn Ausmus added nine as well. The Antelopes hit over .200 in three of four sets before finishing with a .199 overall percentage.

Tech and Weber State are slated to close the Wildcat Invitational at 5 p.m. CT later this afternoon.
