One Seagraves High School student was injured and another was killed in a one-car accident on Sunday, Sept. 1.
Authorities say 16-year-old Victoriano Sanchez of Hobbs, NM was driving southbound on CR 109 in Gaines County in a 2007 Cadillac when it veered off the road, overturned, and struck farm equipment.
Victoriano was taken to Brownfield Regional Medical Center.
There were three other passengers in the car: 15-year-old Gabrielle Sanchez of Hobbs, 16-year-old Kylie Kennedy of Seagraves and 16-year-old Juan Veliz of Seagraves.
Gabrielle Sanchez was transported to Brownfield Medical Center in stable condition.
Kylie Kennedy was taken to UMC in stable condition, but remains in the ICU unit.
Juan Veliz died at the scene.
Lamesa and Seminole DPS worked the scene and reported that all passengers were wearing seatbelts.
A local Seagraves youth pastor said that Seagraves ISD will be opening its doors to local pastors to provide counseling for students.
Seagraves students organized a campaign on Facebook to wear black, purple, or green to honor Juan on Tuesday.
The funeral for Juan Veliz will be held Monday, Sept. 9 at the Seagraves Jr. High auditorium at 1:30 p.m. Rosary will be held Sept. 7 and 8th at Mark Jones Funeral Home for all who would like to attend.
