The SPC Texan and Lady Texan cross country teams will open their 2013 campaign Saturday, September 7 at the Bill Libby Cross Country Invitational, hosted by McMurry University in Abilene.
Competition will take place at Grover Nelson Park, which is located next to the Abilene Zoo. The women's 5,000-meter race will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the men's 8,000-meter race at 8:30 a.m.
"We've been training well and this will be a great test to see where we are at," said 10th-year head cross country coach Chris Beene.
The Lady Texans return four sophomores from a squad that finished third at the NJCAA cross country championships a year ago and narrowly missed a third straight NJCAA Championship at the half marathon championships hosted in Levelland.
The Texans, meanwhile, will look to a young squad in hopes of improving upon last year's 16th place finish at the NJCAA cross country championships.
"Both teams have been training well and should continue to progress throughout the season."
Following SPC's opening meet, the Texans and Lady Texans will next compete at the Red Raider Open Friday, Sept. 13 at Meadowbrook Golf Course.
