Pain killers now labeled with addiction warnings

Posted: Updated:

The FDA announced that prescription painkillers like oxycontin will now come with labels warning consumers about the dangers of addiction.

What that means is extended-release prescription opioid painkillers.

Like oxycontin, opioid painkillers will carry a warning about the risk of addiction, drug abuse and even death from an overdose. The labels clarify that the medications should be reserved for patients in severe, chronic pain, and will also warn against use during pregnancy.

Studies have shown a baby born from a mother who has used these drugs can suffer from ‘neo-natal opioid withdrawal syndrome', which can be life-threatening to a newborn.
