Wouldn't it be great if treating people for a traumatic brain injury was as simple as hormone therapy?
That's the theory from Ohio Medical Center, where researchers are testing progesterone as possible treatment for just that.
"Progesterone has been thought to have a neuro-protective and a regeneration effect that helps patients recover," said trauma doctor Jeffrey Claridge.
In the study, researchers are finding that already, it appears the hormone is helping brain injuries heal faster.
Both men and women make progesterone, but women have more of it. Researchers put two and two together when they discovered that women seem to do better recovering from a brain injury than men.
