Breast implants were first introduced in the early 60's, and now, after five generations of new technology, it is the most common cosmetic surgery in this country with nearly 300,000 procedures performed last year.
Whether you choose saline or silicone, which is softer and a little more expensive, both are considered safe with an improved recovery time.
But, plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Schmid, says there is one thing every patient needs to understand before going under the knife.
"It's not going to be a big fix for their marriage," Schmid said. "It's not going to be a quick fix for any personal issues they have. But in regards to augmenting their body, it could be a great thing for their lives if they're doing it for the right reasons."
Schmid says he has given implants to women between the ages of 18 and 70.
So, depending on your age, they could last forever, but typically, implants need to be removed or replaced in 20 or 30 years.
