TTU: Beware of malicious email about the Syrian Crisis

Posted: Updated:

Provided by Texas Tech University

The Texas Tech University Office of the CIO alerts the Lubbock community of an active, malicious email campaign regarding the current crisis in Syria.

These messages typically direct readers to a webpage, either by soliciting a donation or encouraging you to explore a link for further information. In reality, these messages are "phishing" emails – an attempt to steal your identity. If you click on any of the links within the email, malicious software may also install on your computer—without notifying you that the installation is occurring.

If you receive one of these messages, please delete it immediately. If you have responded to any of these emails and provided personal information, please contact your local IT support provider immediately for additional assistance.

The TTU IT Division recommends the following safe computing practices to protect your information and TTU information resources:

  • Do not click on links contained within an email unless you are certain of the sender's identity and expecting the information;
  • Do not open attachments unless you are certain of the sender's identity and expecting the information;
  • Delete and do not reply to any of these emails;
  • Update your desktop, laptop, and/or mobile device anti-virus software; and
  • Keep current on critical system updates: Windows Users: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com; Mac Users: Use Software Update in System Preferences

We encourage you to be vigilant in practicing safe computing. For additional safe computing tips and information, as well as a list of area IT professionals, please visit www.safecomputing.ttu.edu and click on "Lubbock Community."
