Chaps Battle Huston-Tillotson To Scoreless Tie

Provided by Lubbock Christian University:

The Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals and Huston-Tillotson each had plenty of scoring chances but were unsuccessful through 110 minutes of play to settle for a scoreless 0-0 tie in men's soccer Saturday afternoon at LCU Soccer Field. The game was the first scoreless tie in program history.

LCU out-shot an opposition for the first time this season, out-shooting HTU 26-20 overall, and they held a 9-6 advantage in shots-on-goal. Billy Forbes led all players with nine shots (five on target). His finest came with a diving header in the first overtime, which went wide providing a sigh of relief for the Rams.

Late in the second half, Jorge Elizalde was able to chase down a bouncing through-pass beyond the defense and chip it over Rams goalkeeper Marcos Sanchez, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out of play. The Chaps were able to beat Sanchez three times with shots-on-goal, but each time the Rams had defenders placed at the perfect spot to collect team saves and defend the ball out from the goal line.

Erik Mozzo, making his 13th career start for the Chaps, recorded his first shutout of his career. He stopped all six shots and had his record go to 1-1-1. Four of his saves came in the second half. Sanchez stopped six shots for the shutout as well at the other end. LCU had 14 corner kicks in the game, with 10 in the first half.

It was LCU's first shutout of the season and their first since Nov. 7, 2011 against Rogers State. As for their offense, it marks the first time LCU has been shutout in consecutive games since closing out the final two games of the 2012 season without a marker. LCU has not scored a goal in their last 203:30 of play. The Rams have shutout their opponents in two consecutive games.

LCU is 1-1-1 through their first three games of the season, and HTU moved their record to 1-3-1. It was LCU's first overtime game of the season and their first tie as well. The Chaps play their first road game of the season Monday, playing at West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas.
