Wednesday, Sept. 18, is National School Backpack Awareness Day.

This is a day dedicated to bringing awareness of the serious health effects that backpacks that are too heavy, or worn improperly, have on people. A heavy backpack can cause back pain for children all the way up to university level students.

Covenant Health offers tips and information to help bring awareness to this issue:

  • The weight of a backpack should be no more than 10% to 15% of the child or person's body weight.
  • You should always squat down to pick up a backpack or anything heavy in order to keep the bulk of the weight in the front.
  • When you place the bag behind you, use both straps and make sure they are secured snug to the body.
  • Stretching the back can help avoid injury and can also help if there is already injury to the back.

According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, more than 79 million students in the US carry backpacks. It is important to learn to carry a backpack properly because the back is a very sensitive part of the body that can be easily injured.
