Travis County Indictments Question Republican Campaign Contributions

In state news, indictments by a Travis County Grand Jury are raising questions about campaign contributions.

On Tuesday, 3 men and 8 companies were indicted on charges that they made illegal political contributions. Under Texas law, corporate money cannot be used for direct political purposes, only for limited administrative costs for campaigns.

All of those indicted are associated with the political action committee, Americans for a Republican Majority. That committee was formed by U.S. House Majority Leader Tom Delay of Texas. However, he has not been charged.

Among the list of candidates who received campaign contributions from the PAC is District 19 Congressman Randy Neugebauer, who received $15,000.

Some Democratic candidates who have linked their GOP opponents to Delay are asking Republicans to return the money.

We contacted Neugebauer's office Friday and his spokesman, Matt Schaffer, tells us Neugebauer does not plan to give the money back.
