YONKERS, N.Y., Sept. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Kawasaki Rail Car Inc., ("Kawasaki") a railcar manufacturer based in Yonkers, New York, was awarded ninety two (92) M-9 Passenger Cars (Base Order), via a joint procurement by Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad (MNR) of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
In addition to the base order of 92 LIRR cars, the Contract includes up to 584 option cars that the railroads may exercise bringing the total number of the cars to 676 with a total contract value of $1.83 billion U.S. Dollars.
Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corporation, located in Lincoln Nebraska will manufacture the carbody structure and perform the equipment installation of the M-9 cars and Kawasaki, Yonkers, New York, will do the final assembly, function testing, project management and warranty support at its local plant facility. The cars are expected to be delivered to the railroads starting from 2017.
To date, Kawasaki has received rail car orders in excess of 4,000 from all major transit authorities in the United States, including all of the MTA's underlying transit agencies, such New York City Transit, MNR, and LIRR, as well as Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.
