A Sudan woman was pronounced dead on the scene of an accident at the intersection of Highway 84 and FM 3269 in Bailey County Saturday afternoon.

Yuri Aguirre Pacheco, age 27, was traveling westbound on Highway 84 when her SUV hit the back of a semi-truck turning right on FM 3269, three miles east of Muleshoe. The driver of the truck, Martin Melendez from Portales, New Mexico, was not injured.

"You didn't ever expect that to be happening to one of your classmates," said Erin Neitsch, a friend of Pacheco's. "Anytime you met her, you felt like you had known her forever. She could just light up any room. It didn't matter what kind of mood you were in, she could always make you laugh."

Pacheco and Neitsch went to school and played basketball together.

"Whenever we were in high school, we were on the basketball team together, and she was always that crazy one that was trying to get us pumped up before the game, making her hair crazy and really trying to get us into a good mood before the game," she said.

Pacheco was eight months pregnant at the time of the crash. She was expecting a boy who she had planned to name Jax. Parademics tried to save the unborn child, but he did not survive.

According to DPS, two children were injured in the crash. Madison Pacheco, who will be two years old in December, was taken to UMC where she remains in critical condition. However, she is making small improvements.

The other child, four-year-old Avery Cantu, is in stable condition and was released from the hospital.

"The family, right now, has more than anything requested prayers," said Neitsch. "They feel like prayer is all that they can ask."

Authorities don't believe Pacheco was distracted at the time of the accident.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Bailey County Coliseum.

Pacheco's graduating class will be setting up a fund Muleshoe State Bank for monetary donations.

The name of the account the that been set up is Class of 2005 in Benefit of Yuri Aguirre Pacheco family.
