The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is set to begin work on a project that will make major safety improvements along US 87 in Lubbock County.

The $10.6 million project will reconstruct the US 87 / Woodrow Road (CR 7600) interchange by building new US 87 bridges, entrance and exit ramps, and making improvements to Woodrow Road, said Will Barnett, TxDOT's Lubbock area engineer.

"We know this project is located on a heavily traveled route and is going to affect a lot of motorists. TxDOT is committed to keep traffic flowing, but US 87 and Woodrow Road motorists can expect various lane closures, traffic shifts and detours throughout the duration of the project," Barnett said. "Our goal is to make sure we get the work done in the safest and most efficient way possible."

Both north- and southbound US 87 traffic, through the construction zone, will be reduced to 65 mph, Barnett added.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin this week with project contractor Allen Butler Construction, Inc., of Ransom Canyon, making drainage improvements on Woodrow Road Saturday, September 29.

"A segment of Woodrow Road will be closed to traffic to give construction crews room to work on drainage structures safely," said Will Barnett. "Woodrow Road traffic will be affected for most of the day Saturday. Motorists will be detoured around the area via Loop 493."

Drivers are asked to use caution through the work zone, since crews will be working in close proximity to traffic and should keep the following tips in mind:

• Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the

major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones.

• Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing

vehicles.

• Be patient. Delays from highway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few

extra minutes to slow down for a work zone.

The project's completion date is scheduled for August 2014.
