Less than a week after being told he was heading out, a Lubbock soldier is getting ready to fight in Iraq. Ammunition explosive specialist, Corporal Eric Escamilla will soon be heading overseas to help fight in the war on terror.
The Texas Tech senior received word on Monday that he had been transferred to a unit in California and would leave for training this coming Tuesday. Although he is eager to serve his country, his first reaction was met with a few reservations.
"I was a little hesitant about being attached to a unit that I had no knowledge of the people. When you go to combat you expect to go with people you have bonded with," said Corporal Escamilla.
He is the only member of his unit that has been transferred. Escamilla has 11 hours left before he graduates with a double major from tech, but will not be able to finish until he returns.
