LCU reaching out to first generation, minority students

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Lubbock Christian University will be hosting a reception Tuesday, Sept. 24, to announce their addition of the Paisano initiative to the university.

The reception will be held at the Cardwell Welcome Center on the LCU campus at 5 p.m.

The Paisano initiative launched in August as an outreach to the emerging Hispanic community and first generation college students. The Hispanic population has been growing at LCU, with a recorded 21% in the fall enrollment.

Monica Barnard of the LCU General Counsel is serving as the Director of Paisano.

The program will look for ways to offer more support for first generation students and minority students among the student body while coordinating with different departments on campus to meet those needs.

The name for the initiative comes from the Spanish word for friend, paisano, which is also a regional name given to the chaparral by ranchers and farmers.
