LSU's success on third down could be key to game

Posted: Updated:
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Third down conversions could be the difference in Saturday's SEC showdown between LSU and Georgia.

Last year the Tigers' offense converted just 40 percent of the third downs the offense faced. In comparison, Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M led the SEC at 55 percent.

With the addition of offensive coordinator Cam Cameron the offense and third down conversion rate has changed for the better for LSU.

With Zach Mettenberger starting on fire in the TCU game and continuing in the three that have followed, the Tiger offense is converting at a 56-and-a-half percent clip, putting LSU right behind the Aggies.

Head coach Les Miles and Mettenberger's big play receivers say they're not surprised and suspect the big improvement could pay off in a big way come Saturday.

Georgia's third down conversion rate is 39 percent on the season.

Kickoff between the Tigers and Bulldogs is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on CBS.
