Spurrier: Shaw to start Saturday against Kentucky

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Days after sharing the news that Connor Shaw would be out at least two weeks after injuring his shoulder against Central Florida, South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier announced Wednesday the senior quarterback will start Saturday against Kentucky.

"Looks like Connor is going to be fine," said Spurrier. "He was throwing the ball very well today. It looks like he will be the starter and Dylan (Thompson) will probably go in about the third or fourth possession. They both deserve to play we think. We'll send them both out there and go from there."

Shaw had to leave Saturday's game in Orlando when he landed awkwardly on his shoulder during a tackle on a quarterback draw in the first quarter.

The next day, Spurrier said Shaw would be out 2-3 weeks because of a shoulder sprain.

Spurrier said Shaw performed well in practice on Monday showing that he had made a much quicker recovery than most believed he would.

"I'm sort of proud of our team right now," Coach Spurrier said. "We have the youngest Division I football team in the country with only four scholarship senior guys on the team. They've done pretty well. We've had some lapses. We've almost blown some leads the last couple of weeks. But to be 3-1 is not bad. Hopefully we can learn from some of these mistakes and get better. But these guys are playing hard, playing with a lot of effort. As coaches, we're proud of what they've done thus far."

Dylan Thomson is expected to come into the game for the third or fourth series.

Spurrier also said receiver Shaq Roland, who was did not make the trip to Central Florida because he was suspended, would sit out the next two games for violating university policy.
