The government shutdown is affecting more than parks and zoos and memorials, it is affecting the nation's public health agencies.
The CDC says a reduced workforce there is bringing that agency to almost a complete halt. That means for now there will be no investigations into food poisoning outbreaks, no one to monitor the measles epidemic, and no one to watch for any early impact of the flu season.
All research and clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health will be stopped until the government resumes operations.
However, the FDA says high-risk food and drug recalls will continue during the shutdown, along with meat inspections by the department of agriculture.
