In November of 1996, Carl Isett was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. As the only practicing tax accountant serving in the house, Representative Isett takes a much-needed perspective to Austin and fights tirelessly for the core conservative values of less government, lower taxes, and greater personal freedom and responsibility.
Representative Isett currently serves on the House appropriations, ethics, and redistricting committees and is the chairman for budget oversight for the economic development committee. He was also named to the select committee on school finance and serves as the chairman of the subcommittee on cost adjustment for public school finance and appointed to serve on the Texas Legislative Council. He was selected by his peers to serve as president of the Texas Conservative Coalition and to serve on the steering committee for the House Research Organization.
Even as a freshman, Representative Isett was looked to as a leader in Austin. His fellow West Texas Republican colleagues elected him to serve on the policy committee of the House Republican Caucus.
He successfully championed legislation involving an accounting method called activity-based costing, which has been used to identify and eliminate wasteful spending in state government. That legislation has become a cornerstone of comptroller Carol Rylander Strayhorn's E-Texas Initiative.
Numerous organizations have recognized Representative Isett for his principled, intelligent leadership in making government more efficient and accountable. The Free Market Foundation's Free Enterprise PAC recognized Representative Isett as "Freshman of the Year" in 1997.
Because of his push for lower taxes and to make government more efficient, Representative Isett was given the "Friend of the Taxpayer" award from the citizens for a sound economy and the "Champion of Free Enterprise" award by Texas Public Policy Foundation.
