Weakened Karen dissipates in the Gulf

(RNN) – After stirring up warnings and putting most of the northern Gulf Coast on high alert, what was once Tropical Depression Karen is dissipating in the Gulf.   

The latest and last forecast the National Hurricane Center issued on Karen showed the remnants of the storm with maximum sustained winds of 30 miles per hour. It is no longer considered a tropical cyclone. 

The storm was moving at 13 mph on Sunday morning, and is located about 85 miles southwest the mouth of the Mississippi River.

Coastal flooding is possible along the northern Gulf Coast, and the NHC also predicts that Karen is expected to produce 1 to 3 inches of rainfall across the area.

The need for around the clock monitoring at NOAA came during the first week of a partial government shutdown that started on Oct. 1.

Some Federal Emergency Management Agency workers were taken off of furlough on Thursday to help respond to Karen.

"Due to the federal government shutdown, NOAA.gov and most associated web sites are unavailable," the NHC website has read since Oct. 1. "However, because the information this site provides is necessary to protect life and property, it will be updated and maintained during the federal government shutdown."
