Lubbock police detectives served three warrants at UMC on Sunday after police officer Timothy Varner was shot Saturday evening near a Salvation Army family services shelter on 17th Street and Avenue K.

Varner responded to a call at 7:45 p.m. about a suspicious man, 32-year-old Jeremy Moor, walking around the area with a firearm.

Investigators say when they arrived Moor was in a truck holding another man at gunpoint. Gunfire was exchanged, and both were shot multiple times.

EMS responded just before 8 p.m. The fire department and at least two EMS units were called.

The police mobile command unit was called to the scene while investigators began collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Salvation Army employee Justin Etherly said Moor was a former Salvation Army shelter resident, and shelter staff were the ones who called LPD.

"A former resident of the men's shelter was asked to leave today after breaking policy. Our policy in asking him to leave is to contact LPD in case he may need to be escorted - just for safety precautions. Upon doing that, we also informed LPD of a possible threat of a gun," Etherly said.

Varner and Moor were transported to UMC. Varner was shot at least once in the leg and in the shoulder but he is awake and speaking and continuing to recover.

Moor is now in the Lubbock County Detention Center after being charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of attempted capital murder.

Jeremy Moor was last arrested in August of 2012 for being a felon in possession of a firearm. According to the court documents, he pled guilty to the charges in March of 2013 and was given eight years probation as part of the plea deal.
