LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

We're learning new details about the mystery tunnel discovered in north Lubbock last month.

The city now says it does not appear to run underneath the street.

Lee Smithwick discovered the tunnel when part of his yard collapsed.

On Monday, crews dug along Smithwick's street and found that it appears the tunnel does not extend underneath it.

That's good news for engineers who were concerned about the integrity of the road.

City Engineer Wood Franklin says, "From this standing point, the city is clear as far as anything going under the road or this way."

Crews also dug toward the alley and say the tunnel does not extend in that direction either.

So now it will be up to Smithwick to determine what to do with the tunnel.
