Judge Jim Bob Darnell sentenced Jeena Roberts to seven years for jumping bail on Wednesday. But she will serve it at the same time she's serving her existing 15-year sentence for intoxicated manslaughter.
That means that she will not spend any extra time behind bars.
But the judge didn't just deliver the sentence, he also handed out some bold words of advice.
"God spared your life. Find out why," Judge Darnell said.
Prosecution chose not to comment on the sentence, but Roberts' defense attorney Robert Scardino says he is pleased with today's outcome.
"We got a fair trial," Scardino said. "Frankly, the judge was the most articulate person in the courtroom. I thought his sentencing was spot on and I thought he articulated exactly what happened and what needed to happen."
Roberts' father, a key witness, was expected to take the stand Wednesday. He was originally expected to appear on Tuesday, but his attorney informed the court he would be unable to make it due to a flight delay.
Although he was in Lubbock on Wednesday, he decided just moments before taking the stand that he would not testify.
There was speculation that Roberts' father helped his daughter jump bail. The defense provided a receipt from the Houston hotel where Jeena Roberts was arrested that was apparently signed by her father.
However, when this was shown to Roberts' mother, she testified that it was not her ex-husband's signature.
"I thought it was obvious what happened," Scardino said. "But he made a decision and it's his and that's what he chose to do - or not do."
