A longtime fixture on the Lubbock and Ruidoso music scene died Thursday morning in a traffic accident near Tatum, New Mexico.
61-year-old Richard "Weazel" Tairoa apparently was driving to Ruidoso from Lubbock when the one-vehicle rollover happened just West of the Texas state line. State police say he was Westbound on Highway 380 when he drove off the road, overcorrected, and then rolled his suburban several times.
Tairoa was thrown out of his suburban and landed on the highway, where he was struck by an oncoming truck.
Hurricane Maria ties for the eighth strongest storm in Atlantic history, when measured by wind speed.
A delicate effort to reach a young girl buried in the rubble of her school stretched into a daylong vigil, much of it broadcast across Mexico as rescue workers still struggled in rain and darkness early Thursday trying to reach her.
Aaron Hernandez's lawyer said the former New England Patriots tight end's brain showed signs of a degenerative brain disease.
Maria hit the island Wednesday morning as a Category 4 storm with 155 mph winds, the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in over 80 years.
